It arrived two days early. No complaint there. I figured it out, its quite clever. Well, it and the watch is.
The watch uses the on-board HR sensor unless and activity is running, whereupon it will seek to use the external device. The new tech uses ECG technology rather than optical. The sensors are built within the strap around the body core. No switches, that simple. It’s comfortable so no problem to wear.
