The ALB was launched to search for an object reported to have been seen in the water by Sandown. Following the launch I was instructed to unhitch the Sea Catch from the Shackle and then walk the winch line and shackle down to the door. Then to lay out the “Haul up spans”. Another trainee colleague and I were then trained on tying the hauling line to the “haul up spans” using bowline knots.

The nature of the shout has been made public here.

Following that we closed the launch door and retired to the control room to monitor progress on the radio and the computer. By 1920 the Lifeboat Operations Manager made the decision that everyone should go home. It was clear the job was going to take longer than expected so we would get paged when the boat was due to return.

That second page came in at 2015. Returning to the boat house I made myself available for Under croft duty, along with two other trainees. We conducted the standard recovery procedure, including full wash down. The rehouse was completed by 2100.

I then witnessed something new. The boat being refuelled. Naturally, running two 18 litre engines for over three hours had consumed a lot of fuel. Both tanks were filled, probably to 1900 litres each, which is the level that we normally operate at. The tanks can hold 2500 litres each but we don’t need that much range. To get the tanks to the correct level required adding 713 litres diesel from the boat house storage tank. That would be over £1000 if it were road Diesel, but this is Red Diesel, which is about £1/litre (VAT added), so still £700 worth.

The pager sounded at 1732, to which I responded immediately.
