Today I was able to get out there and continue. To recap I have half of the third layer of the fibreglass cloth down and I need to finish.

This was the plan and what I will now reveal is simply a disaster.

The fibre I had laid last week had delaminated badly. The edges of the cloth had come up, in some places significantly and the floor was a mess. There was also the question of the discolouration seen in the last week, which a few on the Facebook group had spotted. While the floor had seemed solid, what was going on here?

However, further trouble. The wind and rain of yesterday had moved the support frame that holds the waterproof cover I have over the boat. As a result, water was able to enter by the desk and run back across the entire floor. In the course of the following investigation work I realised I had significant water ingress into where the edges had lifted.

The eventual tool that seemed to work well was the belt sander and I used this to sand the floor back in stages to investigate. It was clear that there was bubbles and some of these were flooded with water. The resin was well gone off but it wasn’t sticking. I then found that the water had gone through the structure and was puddling underneath.

Complete disaster and there was only one thing I could do, tear the whole lot out. Now this might sound like a major job but in actual fact it was easy. I could tear the structure apart with my bare hands. It was a total mess and unsuitable in all respects.

So what had gone wrong here? Well, three things I feel.

Firstly I had overlapped the cloth slightly. I believe this was a mistake as the cloth was trying the straighten again and breaking the structure. Once this began then the air bubble could form.

Secondly, although the plywood had been coated in resin before fitting, I am thinking that it was still drawing resin in. As a result it dried out the first lay of glass, hence the bond was weak.

Thirdly, I considered if I had not put down enough resin. The conclusion, after watch several instructional videos, is I did put down enough resin, but where I had gone wrong was that I put the cloth down on the dry surface and then resin-ed through the cloth. The cloth is a course weave so I reasoned this would work okay. It is now clear to me that this isn’t going to work, and if the floor is pulling resin in then it was double jeopardy.

So the result is that pretty well 90% of my work is now in the bin. The one area that held well and is still in the boat, is the joint seal between floor and hull. That has stuck down well and memory reveals that I wetted the surfaces well first before putting the cloth down. Should have kept doing that bit!

Okay, so the next plan. I am not going to use cloth, instead switching to the “Chopped Strand Mat” product for the glass. While cloth is fine on flat surfaces it seems to me that mat is going to work much better. I have researched and determined that I need about 6 sq/mtrs of the 450 gram product. I have also determined that this is significantly cheaper than the cloth that I originally used, just to rub in insult to injury.

I have also considered if the Poly Resin was in anyway responsible. Research and advice returns that it was not a failure of the resin and that this product is still suitable. As a result I will stick with using it.

So an annoying setback, but I’m going to brush myself down and get back there and fix it right.

It’s been a few days since I’ve worked on the Arrowflyte floor, simply due to the weather.
